ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended the license of a private TV channel Geo News for 15 days and imposed a fine of one crore rupees here on Friday.
Pervez Rathore, newly appointed acting chief of PEMRA, chaired the meeting of PEMRA members in PEMRA headquarters in Islamabad.
PEMRA spokesman said the decision against Geo News was taken on the basis of the complaint received by Defence Ministry against the channel.
The meeting was attended by the government members only as private members of PEMRA did not show up.
The complaint by Defence Ministry was discussed in the meeting and after consultation, it was decided to suspend the license for 15 days and impose a fine of Rs one crore.
PEMRA will continue the suspension if the news channel failed to pay the fine.
Defence Ministry filed a complaint against Geo News for targeting Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) chief for eight hours for brutally attacking Hamid Mir.
Geo News senior journalist Hamid Mir was attacked by unidentified men in Karachi and sustained severe injuries.
