SRINAGAR: Mehbooba Mufti, president of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party who won the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir vowed to take Kashmir issue to Parliament.
Addressing media persons, she said that apart from winning the hearts of people in Kashmir, it is important to take Pakistan in confidence and start a dialogue.
“Based on this decisive mandate, we will do exactly what we have stated in our manifesto; not look for ministerial berths and use the Parliament as a forum for debate and dialogue on the Kashmir issue,” she said.
She said that it is also a challenge for them to come up to the expectations of people after they expressed their confidence in PDP.
Stating that Peoples Democratic Party is not going to look for ministerial berths at Centre, its President said her party is committed to election manifesto which advocates highlighting the political and social issues pertaining to Kashmir in the Parliament.
She said her party would take the issues related to Kashmir in Parliament and make efforts to take ahead the initiatives taken with former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on peace process.
“The Lok Sabha polls this time have resulted in a profound change in the political landscape of the country. People have participated in this election in unprecedented numbers to write a new script in country’s electoral history,” she said.
“In J&K, we too witnessed a change that is unprecedented in its nature and dimensions. Democratic competition has achieved a new cutting edge in the State and people have participated in the process not only in respectable numbers but in case of Kashmir division they had to brave heavy odds,” she added.
“PDP can now legitimately claim to be a pan Jammu and Kashmir party and for this I have to thank the people and the party patron whose idealism and belief in the inherent strength of democracy have paid rich dividends.”
She said that during the election campaign, large number of youths participated in PDP rallies which shows that they are affiliated with it and have great expectations with its leadership. “These results also show that the new age voters vote for real issues,” she added.
She thanked people of the State for expressing their trust in democratic process and constitutional methods of finding a resolution to the Kashmir issue and the issues of Jammu and Kashmir.
