KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Tuesday, officially announced former captain, Waqar Younis as the Head coach of the Pakistan team for two years, however the call didn’t go down well with at least two former heads of the Pakistan Cricket Board, who term the process of appointment a ‘flawed’ one.
Coming down hard on the incumbent chairman Najam Sethi, the former chief executive of the PCB, Arif Ali Khan Abbasi said that since the chairman had already out spelled out his choice, hence the whole process became dubious.
“As per the PCB advertisement, the coach committee had to duly consider all the responses, and the short-listed candidates were to be interviewed before the final decision, however the chairman spelled out his choice even before the cut-off date. How can you jump to the conclusion before the due process?”, asked Arif Abbasi while talking to this correspondent for News One TV.
The PCB advertised the post of the chief coach along with others and the candidates were asked to send applications till May 5th, however the chairman, in an interview much before the cut of date, confirmed Waqar Younis as the head coach, citing consensus amongst the coach committee members.
Commenting on the recent decisions by the incumbent PCB management, the former chief executive, Arif Abbasi added that nothing could be termed rational. “The entire activity that he [Sethi] had pursued so far was questionable, people were unnecessarily embarrassed and he unnecessarily went against the policy, he laid down himself”, opined Abbasi
“Moin Khan was appointment without realising that he could be dismissed. Why have you embarrassed him? After all he is a former captain. Earlier they embarrassed Rashid Latif and Amir Sohail as well”, added Arif Abbasi
Meanwhile, another former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Zaka Ashraf also smelled a rat in head coach’s appointment and described it as dubious. “The decision is not at all transparent”, said Zaka Ashraf
Zaka Ashraf, while criticising the recent decisions, also touched upon Muhammad Hafeez’s resignation from the T20 captaincy by describing it as ‘disastrous’. “The resignation of Hafeez is a disaster for Pakistan. The captain is not the sole responsible of a victory or a defeat”, concluded Zaka Ashraf.
