MIRPUR: After India lost World T20 2014 final match, Indian media blamed Yuvraj Singh for his poor performance in the match that led to low score target by Indian team.
But captain MS Dhoni came to Yuvraj’s defense and dealt with all the question calmly.
He said, “It was an off day for Yuvraj. He tried his best but it’s not easy to come in and start slogging from ball one. He was just trying his best. That’s the most you can do.”
Dhoni believed it was simply not the day for Yuvraj.
“As a player, you don’t want to do badly in front of 40,000 people. You don’t want to drop catches, but off-days happen. And it can happen with any athlete. May be it was an off-day for him [Yuvraj]. Fans will be disappointed but it is the player who is always more disappointed than the fans,” Indian captain clarified.
But ultimately Dhoni had to admit, “We wanted to score as many runs as possible in the last four overs but credit to Lankan bowlers. They bowled perfect wide yorkers. I, for one, know that Malinga bowls these superb wide yorkers. They got only one wide during that phase. They executed their plans brilliantly.”
Sri Lankan cricket team won the ICC T20 World Cup by beating India in the final match of the grand event by six wickets. Virat Kohli smashed 77, but the others simply didn’t get going and India could only put that modest total.
Sri Lanka achieved the target without too many problems in only 17.5 overs, and they lost only four wickets. The Island Nation would celebrate a world title for the first time since 1996.
