SANTIAGO: Earthquake of magnitude 8.2 has struck northern Chile killing five people and generating Tsunami warning late Tuesday, media reported.
Four men and one woman are among the dead people. Heart attack was responsible for two deaths while three were crushed, according to Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo.
According to CNN, “The quake struck about 8:46 p.m. local time, some 60 miles northwest of Iquique. It had a depth of 12.5 miles.”
In addition to the destruction, almost 300 prisoners have escaped from Iquique, revealed Penailillo.
Thousands of people were evacuated from affected areas which led to traffic jams.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (TWC) released an initial Tsunami warning for Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama.
But later all warnings and alerts were called off except for Chile and Peru.
“Many people are fearful after experiencing the powerful earthquake in 2010, so they immediately fled for higher ground when they heard the tsunami warning,” said World Vision emergency communications manager in Chile Fabrizio Guzman.
“There have been multiple aftershocks and communications have been cut off in many of the affected areas. So people are waiting in the dark hills not knowing what is to come, and hoping they will be able to return to their homes safely,” added Guzman.
