LAHORE: Former ISI chief and Afghan war veteran General retired Hameed Gul said that peace talks between government of Pakistan and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) will be successful.
In an interview with a private TV channel, staunch right winger army man claimed that those who till yesterday were against the Pakistan Army are urging and supporting the force to go and fight with Taliban.
He accused Pakistan’s liberals of standing behind army with mala fide intentions.
Answering a question regarding army approval on peace talks, Hameed Gul said that even in 1971, it was Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, a civilian who stopped politicians from going into East Pakistan.
The retired General also claimed that US has failed in stopping Al Qaeda militants as the banned organisation has turned into a franchise and the whole North Africa is being dominated by Al-Qaeda style rebels.
Hameed Gul said that even TTP wants succesful talks as they fear Afgahan Taliban leader Mullah Omar’s reaction who has already termed TTP activities as ‘unacceptable’.
Hamid Gul served as the director general of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence during 1987-89. He was instrumental in the anti-Soviet support of the mujahideen in the Afghanistan War of 1979–89.He also was a vehement supporter of the Kashmir insurgency against India, and is accused by the United States of having ties to al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
