RALEIGH: No. 1 seed Virginia has beaten No. 16 seed Coastal Carolina by 70-59 score after holding strength in the second half of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament.
Anthony Gill scored 17 points to help the Cavaliers pull away late and beat No. 16 seed Coastal Carolina 70-59 in the East Region, earning Virginia’s first NCAA victory since 2007 on a night when nothing came easy until the final minutes.
Down 35-30 at halftime, the Cavaliers began the second half hounding Coastal Carolina all over the court, and the Chanticleers missed nine of their first 11 shots after shooting 52 percent in the first half.
Before four minutes elapsed, Virginia had swatted several Coastal Carolina shots, gone on a 10-0 run and regained the lead.
A No. 16 seed has never beaten a No. 1 since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, and the Cavs ensured history would wait at least another year.
