SOCHI – Sochi Olympics 2014 begins today on 7 February 2014 with an amazing opening ceremony. As always, the Olympics are surrounded by many controversies.

Sochi Winter Olympics has its fair share of scandals too. And the one which really got world’s attention is Russia’s anti-gay laws and Olympic Charter that believes in no kind of discrimination.

One of the points in the Olympic Charter, also mentioned by Google Doodle, says, “The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

Gay rights activists have been very disapproving of Winter Olympics in Russia as the country does not allow information about homosexuality to under-18s by law.

There have been many protests regarding the issue throughout the world. And even UN General Secrety Ban Ki-moon has favored the LGBT community and said, “many professional athletes, gay and straight, are speaking out against prejudice”.
