Utica: Fans at the Calgary Hitmen v Medicine Hat Tigers ice hockey game in Canada threw 26,000 teddy bears onto the ice to celebrate a goal in the Western Hockey League game.
According to reports, each year fans bring the stuffed toys to the game to throw onto the ice when the Hitmen score their first goal.
Pavel Padakin’s goal triggered the celebrations in the 19th annual Teddy Bear Toss Game and all of the toys have been donated to local charities.
It’s the second time in a row Padakin has scored the “Teddy Bear” goal, the only player to do so.
The event was the 19th annual charity effort which happens across the Canadian Hockey League every November and December. The bears are given to multiple charities to distribute to those in need.
The ‘teddy bear toss’ is in its 19th year and it is a tradition which has proved immensely popular with supporters keen to provide toys for charities to distribute to children this Christmas.
Other teams, like the Edmonton Oil Kings, Belleville bulls and Kootenay Ice have their own version of the event where items like winter gloves and hats are thrown in.
