A new research has revealed shocking facts about diabetes; it kills a patient every six seconds and affects 382 million human beings throughout the world. International Diabetes Federation, an organization working with high profile people like Jamie Oliver and Charles Mattocks to spread awareness about this disease and its huge impact on our lives, has released these facts recently.
Diabetes has grown 4.4 percent in last two years, exposed International Diabetes Federation which is based in Brussels. By 2035, Diabetes will have 592 million patients worldwide, meaning the figures would climb by 55%. The reason for this hike will be poor diet, obesity and unhealthy lifestyle, as per the report. In 2009, the number of patients of Diabetes aka sugar were 285 million.
Leonor Guariguata, project coordinator for IDF’s Diabetes Atlas, said, “We haven’t seen any kind of stabilizing, any kind of reversal. Diabetes continues to be a very big problem and is increasing even beyond previous projections.”
The federation also gave away some financial figures about this disease. Diabetes has become a financial burden on governments all around the world. Only this year, the share of Diabetes was $548 billion out of total global health care spending.
Jamie Oliver who has a chain of food outlets spread across London to Sydney has been featured in the Diabetes Voice, a magazine published regularly by this federation. On the other hand, Charles Mattocks is also doing same efforts by visiting the whole country and spreading awareness about healthy food and active lifestyle.
The federation’s efforts are not going in vain as 200 countries have set 9 different health targets to be achieved by 2025. One of the targets is to lessen the consumption of salt by 30 %, which will play a huge role in fighting off cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Another initiative is to cut the marketing campaigns run by various food chains that are driving our kids towards unhealthy eating habits.
