Washington: After Samsung and LG, American technological giant Apple likely to join the flexible display smartphone market, as report claims that the company is working on large curve display device.
A report from Bloomberg claims that Apple is in development on a pair of larger iPhones at 4.7 and 5.5 inches.
Rumors of iPhones larger than the current four inches have been in the mill for years but the report also says that these devices will incorporate glass that curves at the edge, a potentially big break from Apple’s present iPhone design language.
The company is said to also be experimenting with touchscreens that can detect different levels of pressure, but the technology may not make it into this first batch of devices, which Bloomberg’s source believes will debut in the third quarter of next year.
Curved displays have made a splash lately thanks to Samsung’s Galaxy Round and LG’s G Flex, but both devices are seen as somewhat experimental early-round efforts to show what flexible displays are capable of no global release plans have been made for either phone.
Apple’s plans sound less ambitious, meanwhile, merely curving the glass that sits on top; it’s similar to a rumor earlier this year suggesting that the company was working on a curved-glass smartwatch. Pressure sensitivity could be the bigger boon, a powerful new feature for gaming where a touchscreen typically offers limited input options. It’s an area of focus for Apple lately: iOS 7 includes new gaming hooks that will lead to full-fledged gaming controllers.
