ISLAMABAD: The apex court of the country has threaten the forces-run cantonment boards to freeze their funds in case of their failure in holding local bodies poll.
The comments were made by the court while hearing the Defence Secretary Contempt of Court case.
“The apathy of the cantonment boards is just intolerable. No laws have been drafted for last 14 years,” the chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry observed.
Despite repeated cautions to Defence Ministry, the authority responsible to run affairs at the cantonment boards, has failed to respond to SC directions.
Earlier, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) claimed to finalize all arrangements regarding Local bodies’ election in cantonment areas across Pakistan.
ECP outlined policies related to local bodies elections in 43 cantonment constituencies throughout the country while ‘A’ list has also been prepared and at least participants will participate in the electoral process, sources said.
The ECP will hold elections in 20 cantonments from Punjab, 8 from Sindh, 11 from KPK and 4 from Balochistan.
In Punjab 114 wards, Sindh 40, KPK 32 and 11 wards in Balochistan will be competing in upcoming elections.
