KARACHI: Former Pakistan Cricket chief selector, Mohsin Hassan Khan has put his weight behind veteran batsman Younus Khan and said that the former captain should not be dropped from the one-day squad against South Africa.
“Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq are the two fittest players in the team and apart from these two we don’t have a dependable batsman in the line-up either. As long as he [Younus] is fit he should be considered for selection.” said Mohsin Khan, while talking to this correspondent for News One TV.
“If I was the chief selector, I would not have dropped Younus from the one day squad, instead would have spoken with him about his priorities. The management should talk to senior players and devise a mutual strategy regarding their careers” added Moshin Khan, who held the position of the chief selector in the recent past.
On a question, Mohsin Khan admitted that Younus Khan had not been performing well at the shorter format, however added that a player of his stature should be given a respectable sendoff. “His immense experience should be fully utilised to groom the youngsters. We do have talented backup players but they require temperament to excel. The selectors should have spoken with Younus about their future plans. I think he deserves this much of respect”, said Mohsin Khan, who was Pakistan’s head coach before Dav Whatmore.
The former opener also commented on the recent administrative turmoil at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), adding that sincerity was the only perquisite for any business to flourish. Upon a query, Mohsin Khan said that it would be an honour if his name was forwarded for the post of the PCB chairman in the upcoming elections. “If I am given the honour of serving as Chairman, I would certainly bring about the change”, hoped Mohsin Khan.
“In the past as regional general manager, chief selector and head coach, I tried to discharge my responsibilities with utmost honesty and I’ll continue doing so if entrusted with an even greater responsibility”, concludes former opener Mohsin Khan, who played 48 Test matches for Pakistan from 1977 to 1986.
