The Hindu devotees were crossing the Sindh river via bridge for a religious gathering on 9th day of Durga festival scheduled at the Mandula Devi temple while more than 500,000 pilgrims are currently taking part in the ritual.
Several casualties occurred as many persons jumped into the river saving their lives near the Ratangarh temple; resultantly drowned while Indian police officers commenced rescue work and trying to recover the dead bodies.

The stampede turned huge when police officials resorted baton charge on the devotees in order to control the situation.
However, rescue teams have started their activities on the location with help of police officials; shifted several dead bodies and injured persons to hospital.
A police official told TNT representative that the deaths could be in double figure.
Earlier in 2006, at least 35 Hindu devotees were washed away followed by water release from the Manikheda dam in adjoining Shivpuri district at the same location.
