WASHINGTON: The United States of America (USA) has increased pressurising Pakistani government by expressing their serious concern over Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.
US officials have termed the developments in the gas pipeline project as violation of US restrictions over Iran and said that Pakistan could face economic sanctions for their country.
Wendy Ruth Sherman, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs of USA, stated in the foreign committee that US will not allow violations of sanctions imposed on Iran.
Sherman said that US authorities are holding talks with Pakistan over the issue while she added that Pakistan knows the meaning of sanctions.
Earlier, the Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that his country will proceed with a plan to build a gas pipeline from Iran, despite objections from the US the project wouldn’t trigger US sanctions in Islamabad’s legal opinion.
The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, also known as the Peace pipeline, is an under construction pipeline to deliver natural gas from Iran to Pakistan and targets the first flow of gas from the pipeline in December 2014.
