KARACHI: While addressing to 57th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) plans for the expansion of nuclear power program to combat energy crises in the country.
While addressing to the 57th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Dr Ansar stated that for overcoming the crises of energy, PAEC plans to expand its nuclear power program. Nuclear power need to be used as the conventional energy sources are very limited ones.
Dr Ansar said that the relationship with IAEA has proved to be mutually beneficial and productive and willing to further strengthen the bond of mutual cooperation.
The Chairman further said that the nuclear technology is mostly utilized in industries, cancer diagnosis and treatment‚ agriculture‚ food preservation and water management. However, it would be encouraging that the same must be utilized for the purpose of electricity generation to overcome crises.
Dr. Parvez said Pakistan had a long history of safe operation of nuclear power plants as its first nuclear power plant became operative forty years ago.
He informed the Conference that two more nuclear power units are under construction that might be connected to the national grid by 2016.
