ISLAMABAD: A document of understanding DOU was signed between Higher Education Commission (HEC) and University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia here at HEC Islamabad.
Mr. Peter Heyward, Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan was chief guest on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, he termed the signing of document of understanding between HEC and leading Australian University, a milestone for strengthening relationships between the two countries. He also emphasized over more institutional linkages especially in the area of higher education to undertake collaborative efforts in addressing various global challenges.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar Ahmed Executive Director HEC said that Higher Education Commission (HEC) has been greatly emphasizing human resource development programs to order to meet growing needs of universities, R&D organizations and industries. He also suggested for visit of delegation of vice chancellors of Pakistani universities to Australia to explore new avenues of cooperation.
Ms. Fiona Dochery, Pro-Vice Chancellor UNSW informed that University of New South Wales, Australia is one of the prestigious university which ranked 85 according to 2012 Times Higher Education World Universities ranking, 5th in Australia and 52 according to QS world Universities ranking. She appreciated the efforts of HEC for undertaking marvelous PhD program and investment over the youth of the country. She admired the intelligence level and contributions of Pakistanis in Australia.
The joint funded scholarship program by HEC and UNSW is a fully funded scholarship which covers tuition fee, college fee, stipend, health insurance and air travel. UNSW has offered full tuition fee waiver and HEC will provide maintenance allowance, health insurance and air fare. Scholarships will be offered for Doctoral Studies in all areas of knowledge which are currently being offered in UNSW keeping in view the national needs.
HEC has sent so far 50 scholars to Australia for Doctoral Studies out of which around 21 scholars have returned back Pakistan after completing the PhD and 29 are currently studying.
