LONDON: British-based National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has revealed reports indicating significant increment in child sex abuses across United Kindgom as 600 cases has been recorded this year.
NSPCC said that the number of calls to report the serious sexual abuse of children has increased up to more than 80 per cent referred to police and social services just after media coverage of Jimmy Savile scandal.
The number of calls made to the NSPCC to report the serious sexual abuse of children has risen by more than 80%, prompted in part, the charity says, by coverage of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
The significant increment has been noted by NSPCC officials as calls to the 24-hour free phone number almost doubled in June and July compared with the same period last year, with nearly 600 cases being referred to police and social services.
According to statistics of last year, there were 323 cases reported while in recent year 600 cases has been recorded this year which showed 84% biggest hike in calls about all forms of abuse.
NSPCC’s helpline head, John Cameron said there had been a sea change in terms of speaking out about abuse after BBC DJ Jimmy Savile was posthumously unmasked by police as a “prolific, predatory sex offender” who abused more than 200 people, many of them children, over a 60-year period.
The revelations sparked a huge police operation which has seen a number of high-profile arrests.
Cameron said victims were now more confident about speaking out and there were increasing numbers of adults prepared to take action if they thought a child was at risk.
He added: “The number of calls we took this summer was significantly higher than last year. Eight months on, we can confidently say that the Savile scandal is changing the way in which people react to abuse. There appears to be a clear shift and the public now seem better equipped and more confident to report their concerns.”
“The Savile scandal has shocked the nation, but has also increased public awareness of how difficult it is for children to speak out and how crucial it is for adults to report any suspicions or concerns they have straight away,” Cameron said.
“We urge anyone who suspects something is wrong with a child not to hesitate. Don’t wait until you’re certain, take that vital step immediately and call the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000. You could save a child from abuse.”
It should be mentioned that the charity had made 30,000 child protection referrals as compare to the year before when there had been 20,000.
Moreover, the cases related with sexual abuse are consistently increasing with the reports of physical attacks on children.
