Karachi: Supreme Court has resumed hearing of Karachi law and order case under a five judge larger bench in Karachi.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry chaired the case at Karachi Registry, Supreme Court. DG Rangers arrived at Supreme Court after sometime.
Currently the metropolitan city is faced with gruesome disturbances due to target killings and life threats on its citizens. almost 150 different applications and petitions have been filed which may also be available for hearing.
Around 150 different petitions, miscellaneous applications and reports are fixed and expected to be taken up by the bench over the next three days, according to the roster.
As soon as the hearing started, the absence of Director General Sindh Rangers made Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry angry. He expressed his dissatisfaction over the performance of Rangers personnel. Both the Rangers and Police have equal responsibility to control the city’s situation.
In response, Justice Gulzar Ahmed stated that the situation in the city is uncertain. The police must reach without protocol, he added.
In response, Inspector General of Sindh Police said that the police officers have been demoted on behalf of orders of the court. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry exclaimed, “Who is so powerful to stop police from performing their duties”.
CJ further added that the top officials of police should work accordingly in the metropolis without protocol.
In response, Justice Gulzar Ahmed inquired, “You say that the department of police and security is unsafe”?
DG Rangers said that since last few days the situation in the city has worsned. he inquired that how can peace take place in the city, until the Courts punish the culprits. he further added that militant wings in the city of Karachi have been under the political influence.
DG Rangers stated that for the last few days, most affected area is Old City. Since the last 2 years, Rangers had total authority, but the orders get invalid.
In response, CJ said that if everything is ok, he is willing to go to Old City areas of Kharadar and Chakiwara. Chief Justice also inquired about the journalist Wali Khan Babar, who was killed while he was going home after finishing his duties.
Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry further inquired that why the witnesses of murder case were not given the protection. In 9 days, 100 people have been killed, where was Police and Rangers. Obey the orders of the court and bring peace in the metropolitan city of Karachi.
The former Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf, Rehman Malik, Awais Muzzafar and Qaim Ali Shah has also been included for carrying extra ordinary protocol.
