ISLAMABAD: More than half of Pakistani believe that nuclear tests 14 years ago was the right step in right direction.
According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, a significant majority of Pakistanis (69%) believe that the country took the right step in conducting its nuclear tests 14 years ago.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Almost 14 years after Pakistan’s nuclear tests, do you feel the country took the right step in taking this initiative?” Responding to this, 69% said it was the right step and 16% said it was wrong. However, 15% did not give a response.
Support for developing nuclear capability was high in Pakistan as early as the late 1980s, when a poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan revealed that 87% of Pakistanis were in favor of developing nuclear capability. Similarly, a Gallup Pakistan poll conducted in 2012 revealed that 40% of Pakistanis identified the country’s nuclear capability as its most significant achievement since its creation in 1947.
Question: “Almost 14 years after Pakistan’s nuclear tests, do you feel the country took the right step in taking this initiative?”
The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2606 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during June 24, 2013 – July 01, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
