LESZNO: Karnal Abdin of UK defeated his club mate Murshad Khan in a sensational final to lift the 17th Carrom Euro Cup 2013 Trophy in Singles Event at Leszno near Warsaw, Poland. Despite the tough battle between the two British Players throughout the tournament – where some matches were decided only by the margin of a single point – Karnal Abdin made the Singles final one sided affair, easily defeating Murshad Khan in two straight sets.
Hosted by Polish Carrom Federation under the supervision of European Carrom Confederation (ECC) Euro Carrom Cup 2013 was played from 21st – 23rd of June at Leszno, Poland.
Third place was secured by Fabian Pereira of France on Bucholz points’ basis. He had a neck to neck competition with German Champion Peter Boecker where both players secure 8 wins and a tie game out of 11 matches played. German Champion Peter Boecker despite equalizing the points with Fabian lost on the basis of ‘Bucholz’ points and landed on 4th place. The matches were conducted under Swiss League System.
The 17th Carrom Euro Cup was opened with a formal ceremony on 21st June 2013 at ‘Palace in Leszno’ near Warsaw. During their the speeches Jakub Nowakowski President Polish Carrom Federation, Arif Naqvi President of the European Carrom Confederation and International Carrom Federation and Mayor of Leszno Mr Andrzey Cieslak welcomed the participants. Nowakowski assured best possible hospitality thanking all Carrom Players and Federations for their participation, Arif Naqvi praised the excellent arrangements of the Euro Cup and stressed on the social values of the game of Carrom.
Naqvi especially praised the rising standard of the Carrom in Europe and appreciated that about one hundred and twenty (120) players are taking part in this year’s Euro Cup. Furthermore he informed the participants about the planned Ceremonies on 25th Anniversary of ICF in October 2013 in Delhi.
Mayor Andrzey Cieslak not only praised the game of Carrom but assured his full cooperation in any international Carrom event conducted in his county. He was happy that Carrom is becoming popular in Poland.
About 120 players from ten (10) European countries participated in the Euro Cup, appreciated as the best organized Carrom Euro Cup in 17 years hosted by a quite young ICF member federation with One hundred and ten players (110) took part in the Singles Event alone.
Swedish pair Mehedi Hassan and Babu Saravan defeated UK’s Sunahar Ali and Abdul Malik to lift the Doubles Trophy for the first time in European Carrom History. Third place was secured by Faian Pereira and Kevin Sieger of France.
French players Pierre Dubois, Mouraly Venou, Alfred Rajadurai and young French sensation Venou Radjou dominated the Team Championship securing the trophy. While UK’s Karnal Abdin, Nazrul Islam, Murshad Khan and Ala Mia managed to secure the second place. Germany had to rest on third place, despite of equal points with UK. The decision was made on points’ basis and Germany having lost earlier in straight match with UK has to settle at third. Switzerland, Italy, Poland Czech Republic, Germany, UK and Germany participated in the Euro Cup Team Event.
The closing ceremony following a big Indian Cultural festival, with the performance and display of Indian Musical Dances, Yoga, Henna paintings, Cuisine, Carrom, photo exhibition etc. The event was organized on the last day of Euro Cup at the lbig lawn, Hotel Palast in Leszno. It was attended by several thousand local inhabitants and the Carrom players from all over Europe.
Followed by the festival Euro Cup 2013 Prize Distribution Ceremony was held in the evening, attended by the Mayor of Leszno Andrzey Cieslak and other dignitaries. Speaking on this occasion Arif Naqvi praised on behalf of the players the excellent arrangements by the host federation and the friendly and cooperative atmosphere among the players.
Handing over the ECC presidency to UK’s Nazrul Islam, Naqvi wished him a very successful tenure. Nazrul Islam thanked Arif Naqvi for his contributions in ECC and assured that he will do his best to fulfill his responsibilities which are not easy. On behalf of the UK Carrom Federation Nazrul Islam invited the players to 18th Carrom Euro Cup in London next year.
After the speeches of the outgoing ECC President and the new ECC President the Prizes were distributed by the President and Secretary of the Polish Carrom Association Jakub Nowakowski and Paulina Nowakowska. The main organizer of the 17th Euro Cup Paulina Nowakowska received a rousing applause for her excellent work as the Tournament Secretary of the Euro Cup.
Earlier on Friday ECC President Arif Naqvi and Secretary Elisa Martinelli had declared their retirements from their posts in ECC preferring a new team and Nazrul Islam and Josef Meyer were elected unanimously for the same posts.
