WASHINGTON: “StreetPass Mansion,” “StreetPass Squad,” “StreetPass Battle” and “StreetPass Garden” become part of the 3DS lineup of proximity-based games — but this time, you gotta cough up a little cash.
Fantasy adventure “Find Mii” (aka StreetPass Quest) and picture mosaic collection “Puzzle Swap” are baked in to every handheld 3DS for free, allowing the portable consoles to exchange information as their owners passed by unawares.
Around 30 full games such as “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” “Mario Kart 7” and “Super Mario 3D World” also make use of StreetPass with bonus items and high scores piggybacking the exchanges.
Now Nintendo is expanding its roster of StreetPass games with four more titles, with European and Japanese users first to notice the difference in a June 18 update.
Each of the four new StreetPass titles costs 5 euros / £4.49 on its own, or 15 euros / £13.49 for all four bought together.
“StreetPass Mansion” takes budding detectives inside a haunted house, “StreetPass Squad” is a space-based variation on “StreetPass Quest” and its sequel, while “StreetPass Battle” challenges players to conquer the world, and “StreetPass Garden” gives greenthumbs a patch to tend, and contains a nod to the real-world genetic scientist Mr Mendel.
The additions represent a dovetailing of two Nintendo announcements made during the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
First, it promised to expand StreetPass’s feature set, talking up plans to use Starbucks and McDonalds locations as meeting hubs, and second, it indicated an active interest in attaching in-app payment schemes to free games, integrating a dominant industry trend by doing so.
