“We’ve got lots of action coming for you from the Nintendo booth, including gameplay videos, trailers, developer interviews and other great content that you won’t want to miss,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime in a video posted to YouTube.
Fils-Aime remains well known for his presence at Nintendo’s previous E3 stage shows. His commanding debut in 2004 earned him a nickname, “The Regginator,” and he spawned an internet meme in 2007 by proclaiming “my body is ready” before trying out the Wii Fit balance board — a piece of kit that flummoxed traditional fans but won over a new audience, sparking a fitness game craze.
But more recently, Nintendo has preferred to communicate directly with fans where possible, squashing potential for awkward on-stage moments and embarrassing technical hitches.
Speaking in another video posted to Nintendo’s Facebook page, Fils-Aime said, “We’ll still be at E3 revealing new information about upcoming games, and those of you at home will still be receiving the same stream of content and updates that you always have. But it’ll be different, and it’ll be better.”
And so Nintendo is planning updates throughout the day on June 11, as E3 opens its doors, with a new Nintendo Direct video deployed at 7am Pacific Time, developer interviews at 12pm, a Wii U software showcase recap at 1pm, and a Day One Wrap Video scheduled for 7pm.
January’s Nintendo Direct webcast promised E3 showings for Wii U games in the “Mario Kart” and “Wii Party” series, with something new from the “Super Mario Galaxy” team and a glimpse of a new “Super Smash Bros.” on Wii U and portable 3DS.
In North America, there’s also a partnership with the Best Buy retail chain, with local demos of some of the Wii U games from Nintendo’s E3 roster in 110 stores on the afternoons of Wednesday, June 12 and Saturday, June 15.
