TEHRAN: AP reported the sources monitoring Iran’s nuclear program have gleaned the information that country’s only nuclear power producing reactor plant was damaged by the recent earthquakes. Long crakes have appeared in at least one section of the structure, two diplomats disclosed on the condition of anonymity.
Iran is under UN sanctions for her refusal to stop nuclear proliferation from acquiring nuclear weapons. Even though the Busheher nuclear power plant is not considered a proliferation threat, but its safety remains a concern. Iran has not joined international safety convention and in the past persisting problems have shut down this plant for a long period of time.
The Gulf nations are concerned about the safety of the plant located near the Gulf coast. Saudi Arabia raised its concerns on Tuesday in a session of the Vienna based IAEA. However, Iran insists the plant is robustly built and can withstand the largest earthquakes.
The Diplomats told the AP that one concrete section of the plant developed several meters long cracks as a result of earthquakes on 9th and 16th April. Both diplomats are from 35 member’s group of IAEA, which monitors Iran’s nuclear program. One of the diplomats revealed to AP that the cracks seen were not in the vicinity of the core containing highly radioactive material. The damage information is related to one section of the reactor, which means the damage to other parts of the reactor could not be completely ruled out
