London: As we know that the final of Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Champions League will be played between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at Wembley.
Keeping in view of interest of our readers, we are giving a short history on UEFA Champions League.
The first event of the UEFA Champions League was held in 1955 in which sixteen teams had participated. The first match took place on 4 September 1955 between Sporting Club de Portugal and Partizan which was ended in a draw by 3-3.
Real Madrid had won the first UEFA Champions League title. It also holds the record of winning the title for consecutive 5 times (1956-1960).
According to new format, 32 teams are divided into 8 groups. Each team meets the others in its group home and away in a round-robin format. The winning teams and the runner-ups from each group then progress to the next round. The third-placed team enters the UEFA Europa League.
For this stage, the winning team from one group plays against the runner-ups from another group, and teams from the same association may not be drawn against each other.
From the quarter-finals onward, the draw is entirely random. The tournament uses the away goal rule, if the aggregate goal of two games is tied then the team who scored more goals at their opponent’s stadium will win.
The winning prize of the tournament is €10,500,000 while the runners-up awarded with €6,500,000.
As of the 2012–13 seasons, 40 gold medals are presented to the Champions League winners, and 40 silver medals to the runners-up.
Read Madrid holds the record of winning the trophy for nine times while Milan is on second spot with 7 times victory.
The current finalists Bayer Munich have won the trophy for four times while its opponent Borussia Dortmund holds the trophy for one time only.
The epic encounter between Bayer Munich and Borussia Dortmund will take place at Wembley on Saturday 25th of May.
