KARACHI: Riggers in Pakistan’s provincial capital and economic hub Karachi once again ‘managed’ to undermine all efforts of the Election Commission of Pakistan and security agencies to hold free, fair and transparent elections.
In several constituencies of the metropolitan, there were reports of harassment, bogus voting and inaction of police on such complaints.
Reacting to this situation, several political parties including Jamat-e-Islami (JI), Sunni Tehrik, Muhajir Qaumi Movement, Jamiat Ulma-e-pakistan, Sunni Ittehad Council and PML-N refused to accept results of polls in the city.
Dr Alif Alwi of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf called a press conference, wherein he named MQM for alleged ‘beating up of their political workers’.
Alwi said they didn’t expect that 50 percent of the polling stations will be ‘conquered’ by so called workers of a political party.
In another press conference of JI, that boycotted the elections in Karachi and Hyderabad, Syed Munawwar Hasan said they had been cornered and harassed as MQM fulfilled its designs of ‘mega-rigging’ in the metropolitan.
It said the political party deprived the voters of their genuine right to elect the people of their choice.
Taj Haider, a prominent leader of PPP, seconded the concerns, adding ‘systemic rigging’ took place in the city. He also said many polling stations were ‘taken over’ by activists of a political party.
On the other hand, secretary Election Commission, Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan said it is appreciable that ‘peaceful and transparent polls’ were conducted in the country.
On top of that, security personnel, especially Rangers were rare to be found at the affected polling stations, which were captured and overwhelmed by terrorist elements.
