Karachi – In an era when electronic voting system is a reality and various countries are enjoying the blessings of information and communication technology for casting and counting votes, Pakistanis are disappointed to hear about the likely suspension of mobile phone services on Election Day. Some people were assuming that the questionable practice introduced by the previous government, of suspending cellular networks on important occasions, has been over with the end of its tenure, however apparently the agony has not been over yet and people will have to taste yet again the flavor of living in the Dark Age.
The menace of mobile phone suspension affects people from all walks of life in various ways. “The government should find a better solution for improved security in the country instead of suspending cellular networks on all important occasions. We face a lot of difficulties whenever the government suspends cellular services”, said Adeel, a student of an engineering university.
Saadia, a doctor said that although it is the responsibility of the government to increase security measures to counter the bad law and order situation in the country, people’s basic rights of being connected should not be compromised. “Government should take all relevant stakeholders in loop to devise a sustainable approach to curb terrorism and avoid steps that cripple us from doing our routine duties,” she believes.
Mohsin, a trader was of the view that all of the trading activities come to a halt and the entire supply chain get affected during cellular network suspension. “The cost of doing business in Pakistan has already risen up to the level that making it profitable is an uphill task and steps like this badly affects our business activities,” he adds.
Over the years, cell phone services have become an integral part of our daily lives, without which it is difficult to spend a productive day. In case of an emergency, when services are unavailable, people remain helpless as they are unable to coordinate with ambulance any police. Today, the common man is suffering in various forms and step like suspension of mobile phone only adds up to their long list of miseries and never-ending frustration.
