ISLAMABAD: May 11 is the election day in Pakistan but still 12% Pakistani say they don’t want to vote on election day.
With more than 80 million male and female voters, Pakistan is all set to poll the vote in country’s 10th general election next Saturday.
According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 59% Pakistanis say there is a ‘very high chance’ that they will vote on Election Day.
A nationally representative sample of adult men and women (18 years or 18+) from across the four provinces was asked “What are the chances that you will go to vote on Election Day?” Responding to this, 59% said ‘very high chance’, 28% said ‘somewhat chance’ and 12% said ‘no chance at all’. However, 1% did not give a response.
Comparing between urban and rural respondents, more rural respondents said there is a very high chance they would vote on Election Day (64%) than urban respondents (49%). This is consistent with turnout rates in Pakistan’s previous 9 elections where turnout in rural areas was higher than turnout in urban areas.
The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2641 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during April 15, 2013 – April 21, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
