KARACHI: At least Four killed and 14 people were injured when a blast ripped through an election meeting of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Liyari area of Karachi on Saturday night.
According to the initial media reports from the port city of Karachi PPP’s candidates Aziz memon and Adnan Baloch are also among the injured.
An unknown woman and a minor child were reported killed in the incident.
Injured and dead have been shifted to city’s largest tertiary care Civil Hospital.
“14 including PPP’s candidate two brothers, three children and three women were also among the injured” officials told to TheNewsTribe.com.
Aziz Memon is PPP’s candidate from NA-249 and Adnan Baloch from PS-111.
As the election approaches, militant groups have increasingly been attacking liberal, secular parties such as the one targeted PPP on Saturday at the port city of Karachi.
The onslaught has forced many of the parties to change their campaign strategy and beside raising questions about the validity of election 2013 if some of the mainstream parties can’t take part properly.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the Pakistani Taliban has directly threatened the outgoing coalition partners, the PPP, Awami National Party and MQM, which are perceived as secular.
Police and security agencies have cordoned off the area where initial investigations are underway.
Meanwhile, a high level security meeting is underway at the Karachi’s Rangers headquarters.
Earlier, at least two people were killed and more than 25 were injured in two separate blasts near the MQM election office in the city’s Orangi Town area.
This is a developing story and will be updated as reports come in.
