New York: Scientists successfully killed cancer cells having no side effects by using new radiation therapy ‘Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT)’ that was particulaly-designed boron chemical spares.
Older cancer treatment ‘radiotherapy’ used to wipe out the cancerous tumours but damges other healthy cells which hair loss, diarrhea, nausea and sore skin.
The scientist team from the University of Missouri under the supervision of US awarded Professor M. Frederick Hawthorne has completed the trials successfully on mice and killed the cancer cells by BNCT.
The scientist observed that cancer cells grow faster than normal cells and absorb more materials than normal cells, starving them of oxygen.
The scientists took advantage of the absorbent cells by forcing them to take in a specially-engineered boron chemical.
After the completion of experiment on mice they are now looking for the funds to test the same treatment on humans.
Professor Hawthorne is not new name in this field and has recently been awarded the prestigious National Medal of Science Award by President Obama, the highest honour bestowed to scientists.
He said that ‘Our team finally found the way to make BNCT work by taking advantage of a cancer cell’s biology with nanochemistry.
The leading role of the study, Professor Hawthorne has described their further plans and said ‘We are ready to move on to trials in larger animals, then people. However, before we can start treating humans, we will need to build suitable equipment and facilities”.
The research has been published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
