KARACHI: In recent times Pakistani society is affected by many factors, from target killing to political injustice and from bomb blasts to natural disaster. Nevertheless fortunately entities like Oxford University Press Pakistan (OUPP) are keen to play their role in the uplift of the society.
This time OUPP brought on board Patrice Khan, a clinical psychologist, writer and school counselor to conduct a workshop for children, parents and teachers at Oxford Bookshop here in Karachi, the coastal metropolis. This workshop was focused on the changes that kids face today due to natural and man-made disasters, their thoughts and feelings about these changes, and more importantly how to cope.
Patrice Khan is the author of “When Nature Strikes’” a self-help book for children, published by OUP. The book is aimed at the pain, suffering, and loss that young victims face affecting them either mentally or physically or both to help them recover from the trauma. This book provides them with the support during their time of transition. Through a variety of activities it helps them express their feelings and emotions to overcome their fears, tensions, and emotional turmoil.
Khan believes that children needed to be explained that expression can help them cope with sadness and loneliness. Quoting the example of children in disaster-hit areas of Pakistan, Khan said the key was to encourage them to speak, draw or write about it.
In her workshop, she talked with the participants how to deal with other events that can be equally upsetting, like a shift to a new place, loss of friends or family. The participants took part in a number of activities and exercises which focused on how to shift from one side of the emotional spectrum – that is the sad and depressed part – to a happier and calmer place.
