ISLAMABAD: People across the country are celebrating Pakistan Day today to commemorate passage of the Lahore Resolution, which laid the foundation for the creation of Pakistan.
The historic resolution, now known as the Pakistan Resolution, was approved on March 23, 1940, and called for the creation of an independent State consisting of the Muslim majority areas of united India.
The day will begin with special prayers for the progress and prosperity of the country, followed by a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salutes in each of the provincial capitals.
On this public holiday, the national flag will be hoisted on important public and private buildings across the country and all Pakistani missions abroad. Governmental, political, cultural and social organizations have planned various programmes to mark the day.
Several dignitaries will visit the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi to lay floral wreaths and pay homage to the father of the nation.
In Lahore, several high-ranking officials will visit the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal to pay homage to the great poet and philosopher.
The day will also be celebrated with traditional zeal in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to commemorate the passage of the solution.
Pakistan Television, Radio Pakistan and private channels will air special programmes to highlight the significance of the day, along with various aspects of the lives and work of Mr Jinnah and other leading personalities related to the independence movement. Newspapers across the country will publish special supplements in connection with the day.
