Washington: US intelligence agencies informed the Congress that upcoming general election will be significant for Pakistan, so must be conducted without delay, The News reported.
“Islamabad is intently focused on Afghanistan” in anticipation of the withdrawal of American and NATO forces, Director of US National Intelligence James R. Clapper also noted in a report sent to Congress.
The report said that since last year Pakistani government has attempted to improve relations with Afghanistan.
It noted that “Economically, trouble looms Pakistan, with its small tax base, poor system of tax collection, and reliance on foreign aid, faces no real prospects for sustainable economic growth.
“The government has been unwilling to address economic problems that continue to constrain economic growth. The government has made no real effort to persuade its disparate coalition members to accept much-needed policy and tax reforms, because members are focused on retaining their seats in upcoming elections.”
Of Pakistan relations with India, US intelligence officials informed the Congress that both countries had made calculated decisions to improve ties, despite deep-rooted mistrust.
According to the report, Pakistan and India would likely to make progress on economic ties as they held diplomatic and trade meetings last year. However, rift between the two countries on more serious issues of territorial disputes and terrorism would continue.
