Peshawar: U.S. Ambassador Richard Olson affirmed the importance of the U.S.-Pakistan relationship during his recent visit to Peshawar. In a series of meetings, Ambassador Olson met with 11th Corps Commander Lt. General Khalid Rabbani and Frontier Corps Inspector General Major General Ghayur Mahmood and said, “The United States seeks a relationship with Pakistan that is enduring and strategic. We are grateful for the partnership we share with the government at all levels, especially here in the FATA and KP.”
In radio and newspaper interviews, Ambassador Olson detailed U.S. assistance to the region, which includes the U.S.-funded construction of over 650 kilometers of roads, primarily in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, 2,000 small projects designed by local residents throughout the FATA and KP (including water system improvements, school rehabilitations, and irrigation canal projects), and support to help local officials increase educational and economic opportunities in the region. “The United States is committed to a cooperative and long-term partnership with Pakistan,” said Ambassador Olson. “U.S. assistance to Pakistan in energy, economic development, education, and health is a tangible sign of our long-term investment in Pakistan’s future.”
During his visit, Ambassador Olson also visited the Peshawar Museum. Founded in 1907, the museum houses the largest collection of Gandhara Greco-Buddhist art in the world. Director Shah Nazar Khan and Curator Nidaullah Serhai guided the Ambassador on a tour of ancient relics depicting the history and culture of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
