Islamabad: The highlights of the latest issue of Policy Perspectives – a bi-annual journal of the Institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad – are articles on constitution, politics, governance, foreign policy, national security, economy and energy based on a five-segment symposium titled Agenda before the Nation: 2013 and Beyond, providing solid, viable policy proposals in five most critical policy areas confronting the nation.
Presented by Chairman IPS and former deputy chief of Planning Commission of Pakistan Professor Khurshid Ahmad, former Secretary Foreign Affairs Shamshad A. Khan, retired brigadier and security analyst Said Nazir Mohmand, former economic advisor to Pakistan government Sakib Sherani and former Federal Secretary for Water and Power Mirza Hamid Hassan.
The Agenda before the Nation: 2013 and Beyond is a must read for policy makers, analysts, opinion leaders, researchers, journalists and concerned citizens of Pakistan – considering that the first half of 2013 is a period supposed to witness a reshaping of the present political dispensation, necessitating a comprehensive and balanced academic discourse on these important issues, says a press release.
Another key contribution in the journal titled New Silk Road Initiative (NSRI) and Pak-China Relations by Khalid Rahman, DG-IPS, argues that there is need to study NSRI in the context of broader US strategy for the region, calling upon Pakistan and China to fortify and enhance their overland linkages on bilateral as well as regional levels.
A piece on Chemical & Biological Weapons by Tughral Yamin, retired brigadier and faculty National Defence University, Islamabad, discusses Pakistan’s preparedness against any possible attack of such weaponry.
Other articles contained in the issue debate the ideological and philosophical aspects of some of the pressing contemporary issues such as human rights, ethics and theories of research. They include Western Philosophies of Research and Fundamentals of Islamic Paradigm by Professor Khurshid Ahmad, A Global Ethics for a Globalized World by Dr Anis Ahmad, vice chancellor, Riphah University, Islamabad and Normative Structure of Human Rights in Islam by Syed Mohammed Anwar, advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan.
A survey conducted by an IPS task force of some of the legislation taken up by the present parliament on women’s rights, gender and related issues is part of the volume; throwing light on implications these legislation entail for Pakistani society.
