Islamabad: The Swiss authorities said on Saturday, responding to the letter sent by Pakistani government on the directives of the Supreme Court, that they cannot reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government had sent the letter to the Swiss authorities in November after the Supreme Court’s verdict in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case.
Federal Minister of Law Farooq H Naek has confirmed receipt of the letter from Swiss authorities and sources said Naek would himself apprise Zardari about the contents of the letter.
Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was disqualified for committing contempt of court by not writing the letter to Swiss authorities.
The rift between the government and the judiciary ended when the incumbent Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf appeared before the SC and told it about the government’s willingness to write the letter.
The apex court had given the government one-month deadline to write the letter to the Swiss authorities to withdraw a previous letter to the Swiss government by former attorney general Malik Qayyum who sought closure of alleged graft cases against the president.
