Your future is in your hand & choosing a right career for yourself is the toughest decision of the life. I did not get a chance to have career counseling when needed. It was time to provide consultancy to upcoming generation. I always thought how I can provide consultancy to someone when I was not sure if I have chosen a right career for myself or not. Entered the room with bit nervousness that if I will be able to guide the student or not. After having a session with students, I realized these students need more than career counseling. It is sad dilemma of our country that we lack good leaders in every field of life.
Teaching is profession with lot of responsibilities but expect few schools teachers do not take this responsibility seriously in our society. When we say schools like LGS, Beacon are doing exceptionally well than other schools, is just because of the standardization of the teaching staff there. Not only they have quality teachers but provide proper guidance to students enrolled there. Having career counseling session is a good initiative and such sessions need to be organized after passing out Middle in all schools. For me entering Matriculation is the most important phase of education, it is the time when you should realize that what you are going to do in the future and it can only be done with the guidance of the teacher or with the help of professionals coming to career counseling sessions held in different institutes. In order to secure the right job, the right career choice is in the top of the minds of every job seeker with /without professional qualifications.
Career Counseling is a lasting process since the individual choose an occupation, prepare for it, and make progress in it. Career counseling can only be done by knowing the interests of the student & selection of their subjects. Here, selection of the subjects should be part of school administration after having a proper session with the student but same thing is missing in most of our schools. One such example is “Usman”, student of Matric, having no interest in biology yet forced to have biology in his subjects due to lack of guidance provided to him. When asked what he planned to do in future replied “A Successful Businessman”. On a question “why he did not go for Computer instead of Biology if he does not have interest in biology?” replied “I did not know about the same that we can have Computer as a subject in Matriculation.” Only 2 months left in his exams of Matriculation and the kid have no other choice to go with the subject he do not have interest and is getting low grades in the same.
Good counseling session help students see themselves, first and foremost as an individual, who might not be interested in following on their parents footsteps and could be better suited for some other career. All and all career counseling can be quite beneficial and can help students choose right study course to get to their chosen career. Now it should be consider prime duty of school administration to have such sessions by inviting professionals from different industries but prior to that asks teachers to identify interest of the student and then guide them to have subjects according to that.
