Bhopal: Incidents of sexual harassment of either a girl or a boy are reported on frequent intervals in India, a country having an estimated population of 1.22 billion. Despite huge protests in New Delhi over the gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl, the incidents of the harassment have not halted at any moment.
According to Indian media reports, a 21-year-old student, Gauri Shankar Dubey, enrolled with Jiwaji University, Gwalior, was allegedly stripped and whipped by his seniors to rag him in the hostel.
The student, studying in 1st semester of school, shot off a letter to his warden on Saturday threatening suicide. In the letter, he said, no action was taken against the accused students despite the fact that the matter was brought to the notice of authorities on many occasions.
In his complaint to the warden, he named three seniors Sukhendra Singh Gurjar, Sukhveer Singh Gurjar and Prashant Tripathi, alleging that he was a victim to severe ragging.
“They used to undress and lash me with a whip in inebriated condition,” he wrote. He also mentioned that the college authorities were not taking any action against the students despite a clutch of complaints.
University registrar professor Anand Mishra told media that all three students have been suspended and an internal inquiry has been initiated.
It is to be mentioned here that protests have been taking place across India over the last week to denounce the police and government over the gang-rape of the 23-year-old student in the capital and the surge of violence against women.
Official figures show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year were against women. Delhi has been dubbed the rape capital of India with the number of rapes in the city rising 17 percent to 661 this year.
The biggest protests were seen in New Delhi on Saturday, prompting police to cordon off areas around government buildings.
However fresh clashes erupted on Sunday, which the police control room in New Delhi said had left more than 100 people injured, including 60 policemen.
