Islamabad: Pakistan Ruet-e-Hilal committee announced moon sighting for Muharram-ul-Haram, the first month of Islamic calendar, in different areas of the country on Thursday.
Today is first of Muharram 1434 Hijri and the Day of Ashura, 10th day of Muharram, will be observed on Sunday 25 November.
The committee held a meeting, headed by its chairman Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, in Islamabad, and received testimonies from the capital, Mirpur area of Kashmir and Karachi.
As the month begins, the government has tightened security after intelligence reports about possible terrorist attacks in big cities.
Pillion riding and wall-chalking have been banned in several cities of southern province Sindh and across the western province Balochistan.
According to security officials, section 144, the rule making gathering of over four people punishable, has been imposed in Islamabad and Hangu till the 10th of the Islamic month, besides strict checking at entrance and exit routes of the cities.
