Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of memogate case for indefinite period and directed Asma Jahangir, the counsel of former envoy to US Hussain Haqqani, to inform the secretary interior in written regarding the threats received his client.
A nine-member larger bench of the apex court, headed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, resumed hearing of memo case on Tuesday.
During the hearing, the bench remarked that as per the Article 9 of the Constitution it was the federation’s duty to provide security to the citizens of the country.
The court directed Asma Jahagir to inform the secretary interior in written regarding the threats to his client. On the occasion, the secretary said that the government would provide security according to the nature of threats to Haqqani.
Asma Jahangir argued that whether the interior secretary would save his client from Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), the country’s premier spy agency, and the Military Intelligence.
“Neither my client is absconder nor accused,” she asserted.
The bench directed the secretary to make arrangements for Haqqani’s security and inform the court two weeks before the next hearing.
Later, the court adjourned the hearing of the case for indefinite period.
On Monday, the court summoned Interior Ministry’s secretary to appear before for addressing the security concerns shown by Husain Haqqani.
