Islamabad: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday issued a strict code of conduct for media institutions, to be followed during and after the general elections likely to be conducted in the country in 2013.
According to a handout issued on Thursday, the commission, headed by Justice (rtd) Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, instructed state media groups to provide equal opportunities for the political parties to convey their message to the people of the country.
“Political campaigns on private media groups will be monitored by Pakistan Electronic media and Regulatory Authority (PEMRA),” the commission said.
No media group will be allowed to present analysis after the end of political campaign, the handout said adding the instruction was also binding for print media.
“Negative propaganda against any political party will be restricted,” the code of conduct stated adding that media groups should avoid criticism on the personal matters of the candidate.
It further said that the media groups would only be allowed to transmit election results approved by the election officer.
“Media groups shall not accept funds which could influence their professional responsibilities.”
