Palo Alto, California: Someone at a tech forum advised his readers not to upgrade to iPhone 5 if you have iPhone 4S as there is no big difference between them.
However, someone can disagree this advice of not getting upgraded to iPhone 5 from iPhone 4S.
You say: “If you currently have an iPhone 4S, unless you really want the bigger screen and the LTE networking, there’s little reason to upgrade.”
I upgraded from a 4S and for me the upgrade is huge for 2 reasons: (1) Speed, speed, speed. The iPhone 5 is MUCH improved in responsiveness for Siri, photo editing, and general responsiveness. It makes me that much more productive.
(2) The bigger screen. I find the taller screen makes a big difference when I read text from websites in landscape mode because the text is now much bigger and easier for my aging eyes to read.
The upgrade is totally with it to me (since I had full discount pricing available to me on another line). I wouldn’t pay full price for an iPhone 5, but I wouldn’t pay full price for any phone these days unless the pricing is offset by lower monthly costs (like with Virgin Mobile).
If you have an iPhone 4S and can get the discount pricing, I say go for it and get the iPhone 5.
