Islamabad: British laboratory, Pirbright Institute, formerly known as the Institute for Animal Health, Wednesday claimed that the sheep which were slaughtered on the directives of government in Karachi were healthy and have no viruses, thus ending a month long scandal broadcasted on several news channels.
The revelation was made in the meeting of Senate standing committee on Food Security and Research, chaired by Senator Muzzafar Hussain. The committee produced test results of 102 samples sent to the laboratory.
Sources present in the committee said that it was also disclosed that a high profile government official from Karachi and certain representatives of media outlets were also involved in declaring the sheep as harmful after the importer refused to pay handsome amount to them.
It is to be mentioned here that a Pakistani trader imported more than 7000 sheep from Australia which were later declared unfit for the use due to the presence of certain toxic viruses.
Director Animal Affairs department, Dr Khurshid told the Senate committee that Australia was free from the foot and mouth disease and when the sheep arrived at the port they were healthy.
The committee also ordered inquiry about the import of huge number of sheep after Bahrain refused to allow it on their port.
