Islamabad: Pakistan’s government has decided to establish a monitoring system of international incoming and outgoing calls along with voice and text communication of internet through International Clearing House (IHC).
This was stated by Farooq Awan, Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) at a press conference held here on Friday.
All voice and data communication carried out through mobile phone, wireless, landline and internet will be monitored through the new system.
The monitoring system is being established primarily for security reasons that will be accessed to intelligence and law enforcement agencies of the country, he added. Security agencies will be given access to the database of IHC aimed at tracing information to curb crimes and terrorist activities in the country.
PTA chief said that international calls will attract US $500-600 million annually as national income but grey calls cost losses of $400 million to national exchequer. The system will minimize the grey traffic of international calls significantly, he said.
He said the rampant financial scams and cyber crimes in financial sector will be controlled once the system is placed effectively.
