Cairo: In another incident of blasphemy after Islamic revolution in Egypt, Two Coptic Christian boys were in juvenile detention after locals complained they urinated on pages of the Islamic holy book, Quran, in southern Egypt.
According to media reports, local Islamic cleric and prosecutors accused two children aging between 9 and 10, were detained earlier this week. The incident with the two boys took place in the village of Ezbet Marco in the southern province of Beni Suef.
Sheik Gamal Shamarkal, who is following the case in the southern el-Fashn town, said Wednesday the two boys couldn’t have acted alone and must remain in custody until they confess who incited them.
Police officials confirmed that the complaint was made and said they were investigating to determine what happened. Local security chief Attiya Mazrou told The Associated Press the boys were caught with the tarnished pages of the Quran with them, but no one saw them urinate it.
“They could have found them that way. We don’t know. No one saw them do it,” he said. The boys are to appear before prosecutors again Sunday.
It’s a rare case of minors being accused of contempt for Islam, although Egypt has seen a rise in the use of the law against Coptic Christian adults amid fury over an anti-Islam film produced in the US.
