Kabul: Six U.S. fighter jets were destroyed and two significantly damaged when insurgents stormed a heavily fortified Afghan base where Britain’s Prince Harry is deployed on Friday, a NATO spokesman said.
Three coalition refueling stations were also destroyed and six aircraft hangars damaged in the assault that caused unprecedented damage at Camp Bastion in southern Helmand province, one of the toughest battlegrounds of the war, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, four foreign troops fighting with the NATO were killed in an “insider” attack suspected to involve members of the Afghan police in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, the alliance group said.
NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) did not provide further details but said the incident took place in southern Afghanistan, a hotbed of the Taliban-led insurgency. Two British soldiers died in a similar attack on Saturday.
At least 51 foreign military personnel have been killed in insider attacks in Afghanistan this year.
