Washington: United States (US) Vice President Joe Biden Friday called his Sudanese counterpart Ali Osman Taha to express concern over the safety of US and other diplomatic missions in Khartoum, the White House said.
Biden’s call to Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha came after at least two Sudanese demonstrators were killed on Friday in clashes with police trying to stop the protestors from storming US and other foreign embassies.
The protestors broke into the U.S. and German embassy compounds in Khartoum and raised Islamic flags on Friday in state-backed protests against a film that insults the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
“Vice President Biden reaffirmed the responsibility of the government of Sudan to protect diplomatic facilities and stressed the need for the Government of Sudan to ensure the protection of diplomats in Khartoum,” the White House said.
The anti-Islam film blamed on US has raged violence in Muslim world with protestors attacking US embassies in Yemen, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and other countries. The worst incident occurred in Libya where armed protestors killed four US diplomats including the ambassador to Libya.
