London: As many as 80,000 people have gathered at the Olympic Park to witness the 2012 Paralympic opening ceremony.
Renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking and actor Sir Ian McKellen are also participating in the show—which organisers have entitled Enlightenment—along with some 3,000 volunteers, 100 child volunteers and more than 100 professional performers.
The opening ceremony is marking the start of 11-day of competition by more than 4,000 athletes from 165 countries, including more than 300 athletes from ParalympicsGB.
Key elements of every Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony will also include the Athletes’ Parade, the raising of the Paralympic Flag, and the lighting of the Paralympic Cauldron.
