Islamabad: Prepaid SIMs will not be blocked immediately across Pakistan, and stakeholders and concerned officials will meet next week to discuss the issue, according to the Interior Ministry sources.
It will be decided in the meeting whether to block the SIMs step by step or to regularise them.
The government has been mulling over blocking prepaid SIMs, citing security reasons.
Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik assured he would consult with all the concerned authorities to immediately block such prepaid SIMs to foil the nefarious designs of terrorist elements.
Malik said that such mobile SIMs are also used in extortion activities and the government is planning to block them in various phases.
“The final decision, however, would be made after consultations with all stakeholders and experts.”
Earlier on Sunday, the government suspended mobile services in various parts of Pakistan after reports of terrorist attacks across the country on Eidul Fitr.
