Jerusalem: Standing with the US ally, Mitt Romney, US Presidential candidate declared Jerusalem, on Sunday to be ‘the capital of Israel’ and pledged that America must stand with Israel.
In a visit made by Romney to Israel, he said in a speech that both countries believe in democracy, the rule of law and opposition to Iran becoming a nuclear power.
The republican said that United States has a solemn duty and moral imperative to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. He further said adding that the US would use any options on the table, if he were elected, to prevent a nuclear Iran.
Jerusalem is the bone of contention in the region, and both Israelis and Palestinians have claimed rights to the city.
Advancing the values that United States and Israel share, Romney said, US will always stand with Israel, including its insistence that Jerusalem be the cornerstone of Israel.
Romney’s declaration that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital was matter-of-fact and in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.
“My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem),” he said.
On his visit, Romney’s embrace of Israel was on display throughout the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism’s holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshipers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
Mitt Romney drew a clear contrast between himself and the Obama administration on the State of Israel. In his remarks, Romney did overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran “has only become worse” in the past five years.
